To the Berry family: My deepest condolences 🙏 Washington was truly a fun guy at Sedgefield and in the neighborhood. May God keep you all strong during this time of grief. And always think of the "good times"

June was one of my favorite cousins. He spent lots of time at our house , hanging with "Uncle Earl"., watching baseball games at the park and sitting on the front porch. I have so many fond memories filled with smiles and laughter. I'll miss you June! Wendy Broadway-Linton

As I lay awake in the pre-dawn darkness yesterday, seeing only the light reaching out to me from the other side of the bedroom door, I fretted about what to write about the passing of Washington Samuel Berry Jr. A friend of his, and a new friend of mine in the small group of graduates of the Myers Park High School Class of 1976 that is planning our 50-year reunion, had asked me to write something for the group. One day last week, she had visited June, as he was known. June had told her that he wanted to attend our 50-year reunion, which is but a few weeks away. Even if his brother had to push him in his wheelchair, given his weakened state, he said he wanted to be there. The next day, we lost him. Last night, as I tossed and turned in uncertainty, as the light allowed my eyes to adjust and see more and more in that pre-dawn darkness, I knew that those reading this would be those whose lives he had touched in ways big and small, that you had shed and shared tears and were beginning to try to smile at fond memories. That he had touched you in ways that he knew and ways that he might not have ever known. That he would have touched you in ways you had appreciated but maybe not always acknowledged. That he had left you with things left unsaid. June, of course, touched many people over his 69 years. Coworkers and friends. U.S. Marine buddies. Kids he coached. Family, including three boys and four grandchildren and two brothers, all of whom who feel the loss acutely. As I lay there in the pre-dawn darkness, as my eyes accepted that it was that light emanating from the other side of that door that was now allowing me to see so much of what had hidden in darkness, I realized also that we are all drawn to the light on the other side of that door. We all must walk through it and into the light when our time comes. Washington Samuel Berry Jr. has walked through that door, has walked to his reward for a life well-lived.
