Mrs. Jeannette Smith Hawthorne 82, of Charlotte, NC . passed away Tuesday, February 13,2019 at Levine & Dickson Aldersgrate Hospice Charlotte, NC. Memorial Service will be held Friday, February 22, 2019 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church 3400 Beatties Ford Rd. Charlotte, NC 28216. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am and the service will follow at 12:00 pm.
Jeannette Hawthorne was born May 16, 1936in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the union of Edward and Malinda Smith. She was the middle of three girls. Her parents and one sister, Alma Smith, preceded her in death.
Jeannette attended Schenley High School and upon graduation, began working at Gimbels department store. This experience was perfect for her as she loved to shop. She later joined PNC Bank in Customer Service-Central Information. Jeannette retired after 30 years in service to the company.
In 1954, Jeanette became a mom to Linda, the first of four beautiful children she would bear. Linda was soon joined by her brothers Arlen and William. Later, Jeannette was united in marriage to Kenard Hawthorne. To this union, Starr, their youngest daughter, was born. Everyone who knew Jeannette knew that family was important to her.
Jeannette’s love for family led her to relocate to Charlotte in 1999. She supported her grandkids by attending volleyball and basketball games, plays and other school events. Jeannette loved to read, travel and cook, making sure that a Sunday meal was made each week. Wheel of Fortune was her favorite television show.
Jeannette was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, PA and was a member of that congregation until moving to Charlotte, NC. Shortly thereafter, she joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Jeannette served in Seniors in the Spotlight ministry at the time of her passing.
Jeannette leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Linda Thompkins, Arlen Thompkins Jr. (Earlene), William Thompkins (Felicia) and Starr Howard (Rodney), five grandchildren: Shana and Aaron A Thompkins and Skyy, India and Myles Howard, and four great-grandchildren, Maurice McClain, Jr., Shia Greer, Aaron T Thompkins, and Ava Thompkins, sister Geraldine Jackson (James), nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
