Mr. Joseph Matthew Dixon, 81, of Matthews, NC, passed away Friday November 2, 2018 at Novant Health Matthews. Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church 381 Crestdale Rd. Matthews, NC 28105. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am and the service will follow at 12:00 pm. Interment will take place in the Church Cemetery.
Joseph M. Dixon was born April 11, 1937 to the late James Edward Dixon and Geneva Brown Dixon. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan Garrett Dixon, his parents James E. Dixon and Geneva Brown Dixon. He was also preceded in death by a brother James E Dixon, Jr. and a sister Dorothy Dixon Robinson. Joseph graduated from Anacostia High School in Washington DC in the first integrated class at that school in 1956. He first received an Associates Degree from Southeastern University and then a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration, also at Southeastern. He worked at the U.S.Department of Commerce until his retirement. He also served as a registered IRS agent for many years. Joseph received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He joined Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church after he and and Deaconess Joan Dixon relocated to Matthews where they both became very active members. Deacon Dixon served on the Deacon Board, as a Sunday School Teacher and on many other committees. He would on occasion interrupt the Sunday School Lesson with a humorous anecdote. Oh, and don’t forget the candy. Deacon Dixon would often be observed handing out peppermint candy. He loved his church and all its parishioners. It was his ministry to make people laugh and smile. Deacon Dixon is survived by his three children; daughter Ilene Dixon Short , sons Joseph M Dixon Jr (Julieta) and David M.Dixon. Grandchildren: Joseph III, Joshua, Jenne, Kristopher, Malcolm, David Jr and Aaron and two great grandchildren. By two brothers; Lucius Dixon, Bobby Dixon (Mary) and three sisters; Lelia Dixon Mullens (Bernard), Loretha Dixon, Celestine Dixon Tinsley. A step-daughter, Sharon Simmons. A grandson Jason Simmons and three great grandchildren. He also is survived by in-laws; Josephine Garrett-Coley (Frank), Jacqueline Garrett and Janette Gray and a host of nieces, nephews cousins and other relatives and friends.
