Mr. Linzie Oglesby, Jr. 77, of Charlotte, NC. passed away Saturday September 22, 2018 at Clear Creek Nursing & Rehab. Center Mint Hill, NC.Funeral service will be held Friday September 28,2018 at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church 232 Skyland Ave. Charlotte, NC 28204. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am and the service will follow at 12:00 pm. Military rites and interment will take place at Sunset Memory Gardens. 8901 Lawyers Rd. Charlotte, NC 28227.
Linzie Oglesby, Jr. was born in Elberton, GA on May 17, 1941 to the late Linzie Oglesby Sr. and Jenell Biggs Oglesby. His parents instilled in him that love, faith, kindness and respect and a sense of responsibility are pivotal attributes in life.
At an early age, Linzie’s father relocated his family to Detroit, MI to escape the life of a farmer and to provide better educational opportunities for his children. Linzie was educated in the Detroit City School system; he graduated from Cass Technical High School with advanced skills in electronics.
Linzie enlisted in the Navy where he received extensive training in the field of electronics. He served his country faithfully on the USS Mauna-kea AEZZ ship where he became Head of Electronics. His ship supplied ammunition for military operations during the Vietnam war.
After Linzie’s honorable discharge from the Navy, he became gainfully employed as an Electronic Engineer with IBM Inc. He was the first African-American to be hired in Washington, DC. He continued his training at IBM training Centers in the following locations: Dallas, TX, Toronto, Canada; Atlanta, GA, Manhattan, NY; Rochester, MN; Los Angeles, CA, Boca Raton, FL, Washington, DC and San Francisco, CA.
Linzie was blessed and privileged to be granted secret clearance by the Federal Government and traveled to projects in Canada, Puerto Rico and Barbados, Caribbean Island. He advanced to the following positions: Computer Programmer, System Analyst and Marketing Representative. He had a successful and rewarding career for 35 years.
On December 19, 1964, Linzie was joined in holy matrimony to Thelma C. Harris at the Upper Room Baptist Church, Washington, DC. Their union was blessed with one loving daughter, Phyllis J. Oglesby, who preceded him in death. Linzie was an awesome dad who loved and was supportive of his family.
Linzie was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Highland Park, MD for 19 years; he attended Sunday School regularly and was a faithful tither who loved the Lord, his family and mankind.
Linzie loved life and had a passion for traveling – his destinations included Maui Hawaii, Paris, London, California, Florida, Nassau Bahamas, Bermuda, Las Vegas, Massachusetts and numerous other states. In addition, he also enjoyed attending Redskin games and the Baltimore Bullets; watching sports on TV and playing golf. He was privileged to pay golf in Hawaii, Hilton Head, Pinecrest, Atlanta, Boca Raton, Florida, Nassau, Bahamas, Endicott, NY, Gaithersburg and Clemmons, NC.
After retirement, Linzie and Thelma relocated to Charlotte and became united with Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Linzie loved the Lord and was eager to worship and hear the Word of God. He genuinely loved attending Antioch.
He will be remembered and loved by those he leaves behind including: his loving and devoted wife of 52 years; his brother Charles Oglesby of Ft. Washington, MD; two sisters, Jacquline Evans and Penelope Johnson (Robert) from Detroit, MI; an uncle, Walker Oglesby of Detroit, MI; an aunt Margaret Biggs of Decatur, GA; brother in law Minister Lenard Harris (Gloria) of Charlotte; a faithful and supportive cousin, Dr. Vivian Burke of Winston Salem; special nieces and nephews who were most helpful during Linzie’s illness: Thelma Martin, Alisha Harris, Lauren Martin, Rev. Cassandra Fisher, Teresa Harris, Jarret Martin, Charles Martin, Tony Knox Jr. and Gregory Singleton Jr.; and a host of other nieces, nephews, loved ones and dear friends.
