Mr. Celester Nichols of Charlotte, NC, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at University Place Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Memorial service will be held Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Chappell Memorial Baptist Church 110 Bradford Dr. Charlotte, North Carolina 28208. Visitation will begin at 10:30am and the service will follow at 11:00am.
Celester Nichols, age 81, of Charlotte, NC, departed this life on May 9, 2018. Celester was born in Catawba County to Oscar Nichols and Mary Liza Farley on November 25, 1936. He went to school at Catawba Rosenwald High School and also completed the auto body program at Central Piedmont Community College. He married Rosa Reid on March 23, 1958 in York, South Carolina.
After High School, Celester joined the Army and was posted in Germany. Subsequently, he worked mainly in warehousing at Lowes Hardware and manufacturing at Continental General Tire. In his spare time, he was a contributing member of the Masonic Lodge, and a singer and musician in the F.D.H. Singers group. In addition, for the Chappell Memorial Baptist Church, Celester was a member of the trustee board, men’s choir, Golden Harvest Committee, and he also led adult Sunday School. He also served as president of the Nichols-Farley family reunion. Celester enjoyed following the Carolina Panthers and was an avid sports fan.
Celester is survived by his wife Rosa Nichols, his son Michael Thomas and wife Monica, his daughter Barbara Ann Peterson, his brother James Nichols, his brother Robert Nichols and wife Ossie, his brother Ester Nichols and wife Betty, his sister Lucille Nichols Byrd, his sisters-in-law Sara and Liz Nichols, his grandchildren, Michael Thomas, Jr., Alexander Thomas, Delroy Peterson (and family), and Antonio Peterson (and family).
