Mr. Thomas William (Tommy) Vaughn 70, of Charlotte, NC. passed away Sunday April 29,2018 at Carolinas Medical Center – Main. Funeral service will be held Sunday May 6,2018 at Rock Hill AME Zion Church. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm and the service will follow at 2:00 pm. Interment will take place at Mowing Glade AME Zion Church Cemetery.Mr. Thomas William (“Tommy”) Vaughn was born on April 25, 1948 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was the youngest child and only son of the late Lemuel C. Vaughn and Bletha Long Vaughn. He departed this life on April 29, 2018 four days after celebrating his 70th birthday.
Tommy joined Rock Hill A.M.E. Zion Church at an early age. He attended the public schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg and graduated from J.H. Gunn High School in 1966. Upon high school graduation, Tommy attended North Carolina Central University and later Johnson C. Smith University.
Tommy was employed for many years as a printer with the A.M.E. Zion Publishing House and later with the accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche. Since Tommy was a teenager and could drive a car and hearse, he worked as a loyal employee of the family business, Long and Son Mortuary Service, Inc. Tommy has always been an integral and faithful member of the Long and Son staff.
He enjoyed a good life with his devoted family and friends. Tommy never met a stranger and knew everyone in the community. Even when health issues caused him to slow down and alter his way of doing things, he always had a house full of family, neighbors, and friends to support him whenever needed.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents.
He leaves to cherish warm and loving memories two sons, Darryl Devaughn Jones (Patrice) of Dallas, Texas; Thomas Lamar Vaughn (Joy) of Charlotte, NC; and two daughters, Bletha Yvette Vaughn and Erica Monique Vaughn (“Baby Cakes”) also of Charlotte; two loving and devoted sisters, Addie Vaughn McNeil and Linda Vaughn Izzard of Charlotte; two aunts, Mildred Ellneta Long and Dora Long Johnson of Charlotte, NC; seven grandchildren, Wesley Vaughn of Asheville; NC, Devin Vaughn, Jayla Vaughn, and Myla Miller of Charlotte, NC; Kristian, Nadja, and Jazmine Jones of Dallas, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Nyla Peterson and Christopher Jones of Dallas, Texas; two special nieces, Erin Young and Karmen Izzard; two great-nephews, Chase and Christian Young; and one great-niece, Ava King. He is also survived by a host of loving cousins, including special cousin and caregiver, Beverly Dinkins, fellow Long and Son employees, church family, neighbors, and friends.
