He was the son of the late Smart Samuel Curry Sr. and Roberta Kizer Curry. He entered eternal rest on March 20, 2018 in Winston Salem, NC. Influenced by his mother’s example, Rev. Curry gave his life to Christ at age seven. He often spoke of the impact that his mother’s unshakeable faith in God had on his life. He completed his education while enlisted in the United States Air Force. At age 20, he answered God’s call into the ministry. He was ordained as a minister in the Church of God and became a Pastor in 1960. His first congregation was in Caledonia, NY. In 1974, he moved his family to Charlotte, NC. His life’s work was auto body repair and painting. He soon became the owner of Curry’s Auto Body and Fender Repair Shop. He loved his business and was well known for his frankness and sense of humor. He also often hired employees that were rarely given a chance to work any where else. He rarely missed a day of work in 43 years, even as it became apparent he couldn’t operate the business as he had. Rev. Curry was very active in the NC Ministerial and Campground Association of the Church of God, serving as State Chairman and Credentials Chairman among other roles. He also pastored several churches (Marshville, Stokesdale, Lula Street and Cedar Street). He was respected for his boldness to preach and speak the truth at all cost. Pastor Curry was married for 62 years to Lavohn Lockhart Curry. An accomplished pianist, his late wife’s ministry through music was a great gift everywhere he ministered. He joined his wife in heaven on the second anniversary of her passing. Together they were also blessed with one daughter. Left with loving memories are his daughter, Rev. Tracey Brooks (Jeffrey) of Walkertown, NC; two granddaughters- Jessica Brooks of Charlotte, NC, and Jasmine Brooks of Walkertown, NC; one great-granddaughter, Avery Alexandria King of Charlotte, NC; beloved nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of friends.
