Mamie Qualls Means

Mrs. Mamie Qualls Means 92, of Charlotte,NC.passed away Tuesday February 1 ,2018 @ Levine & Dickson Hospice House Huntersville, NC. Funeral service will be held Saturday 10, 2018 at Walls Memorial AME Zion Church 2722 Bancroft St. Charlotte, NC 28206. Vistiation will begin at 10:00 am and the service will follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Mamie Qualls Means was born May 15, 1925, in Ridgeway, S.C. to the late John and Ida Roberson Qualls. She was one of ten siblings, all of whom preceded her in death.

After moving to Charlotte, NC, Mamie met and married Wilbur Chatman Means. They settled in the historic Druid Hills Community, and raised three sons. They were married for sixty years until his death in 2007. In addition to being a homemaker, Mamie was also employed by the Irwin and Carol Belk family until her retirement.

Mamie, along with her husband and children, joined Walls Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church (formerly Little Hope AME Zion Church). She loved her church family and served as a member of the  Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society, on the Stewardess Board, Progressive Women, Usher Board and  Culinary Committee. Mamie, the oldest living member of the congregation was recently honored by Walls Memorial for her seventy year membership and devotion to the church’s mission.

Mamie was active and out-going. Prior to declining health, she exercised weekly at the Bette Rae Thomas Recreation Center. She was also not afraid to venture outside her “comfort zone”. Whether it was cruising to the Bahamas, flying to New York to see Broadway plays, taking a “Maid of the Mist” boat tour of Niagara Falls, flying over an active volcano the Big Island, touring the Na Pali Coast of Kauai in a helicopter, or attending a traditional luau in Honolulu, Hawaii, Mamie was always ready for the next adventure.

Surrounded by family, Mamie passed away peacefully on February 1, 2018, at the Levine-Dickson Hospice House. She is survived by her sons: Reginald (Carolyn) Means, Preston (Minnie) Means Sr. of Charlotte, NC and Judge Rayford (Evelyn) Means of Philadelphia, Pa.; grandchildren: Preston (Kishia) Means Jr. of Chester, Va; Anya Means-Baker and Matthew Chatman Means of Charlotte, NC; great grandchildren Cameron and Donovan Means of Chester, Va. and Titus Baker of Charlotte, NC; two sisters-in-law, Rosa Means Campbell and Lillie Means; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins; “church daughters” Sandra Bookman-Leeper and Debra Chandler and numerous friends.
