Mrs. Mildred Alexander Smith 86, of Charlotte, NC. passed away Thursday December 28, 2017 at Hunters Wood Nursing and Rehab Center Charlotte, NC. Funeral service will be held Tuesday January 2,2018 at Matthews- Murkland Presbyterian Church 7001 Olde Providence Rd. Charlotte,NC 28226 . Visitation will be begin at 12:00 pm and the service will follow at 1:00 pm. Interment will be in the Church cemetery.
Mildred Smith was born in Matthews, NC on June 8, 1931 to Myrtle Lawrence and DeGransval Burke, step-father Raymond Alexander. She attended Matthews Colored and Clear Creek Colored Schools graduating 11th grade. She married Kenneth Alexander and to this union was born Kenneth D. and Marilyn Alexander. Mildred did Day work, worked in the cafeterias at East Mecklenburg, McClintock and Olde Providence schools and retired as a seamstress from Kenneth Home Fashion. After the untimely death of husband Kenneth, she married William L. Smith. Mildred was a hard worker, outgoing and friendly woman. Mildred was an active member of the Matthews Chapel Presbyterian Church serving as Elder and Usher. When the church merged, she served the Matthews Murkland Presbyterian Church as Elder, Presbyterian Women and Vocal Choir Leader. Mildred provided rides to church and meetings to those in need. She served and worked faithfully in the church until her health failed. She was also Worthy Matron of the Venus Chapter 143 of the Eastern Star. Mildred was preceded in death by mother, Myrtle Alexander; father Rev. D. G. Burke; stepfather, Raymond Alexander; two brothers, James (Annie Bell) and John Samuel Lawrence. She leaves to morn her passing: William L. Smith, husband; step brother, DeGransval Burke, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Peggie A. Lawrence and Jeane B. Alexander; son, Kenneth D. Alexander(Alfreto); daughter, Marilyn Alexander; three grandchildren; Lewis P. Alexander, Danielle B. Alexander, Kristen D. Johnson(Gerald); two great grandchildren; Skye M. Johnson and Laila S. Johnson. There are a host of other relatives that remain (Alexanders, Betheas, Burkes, Clays, Hudsons, Lawrences, Mangums and Smiths.) |
