Naomi Zenobia McCain McClain

Mrs. Naomi Zenobia McCain McClain, 74 of Charlotte, NC passed away Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Her residence.

Naomi Zenobia McCain McClain (Mickey) was born June 20, 1946 and transitioned peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones on August 8, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Viola Gathings McCain and Jessie McCain.  She was joined in matrimony to her high school sweetheart Albert B. McMullen and of that union was born Shondra Nettice McMullen Whatley.  Naomi was later joined in matrimony to the late Columbus McClain. She was preceded in death by her companion of 14 years Odell Walker, Sr.

Mickey graduated from West Charlotte High School in 1964 and was crowned Ms. Chorus her senior year. While in high school, she traveled and sang with “The Adorables”.   Her post high school education included Dental Assistant and Cosmetology programs.  Served 36 years as an entrepreneur in the field of cosmetology and prior to that she worked as a Dental Hygiene Assistant and Insurance Claims Adjuster.

Naomi continued her love of music as a lifelong member of the St. Paul Baptist Church where she served on the Mass Choir, Adult Praise Team and in the early years The Charlotte Community Chorale.  She enjoyed traveling to Cherokee, NC and Las Vegas, NV along with playing Bingo and Pokeno. She also found pleasure in watching her favorite gameshows on television and spending time with her family and close friends.  She has been a member of Alpha Pi Chi Sorority since 1992.

Mickey leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Shondra Whatley, granddaughter Neriah Whatley, her special friend and cousin Lournetta Burrows and Troy Harris (Maggie) and a host of other family members and friends.  She will also be greatly missed by her lifelong friends Ada McClure, Lecora Mobley, Emilye Mobley and Angela Harris along with her classmates Anna Threat and Vivian Mitchell.

A pubic viewing (the family will not be in attendance) will be held Friday, August 14, 2020, from 4:00pm – 6:00pm at Long and Sons Mortuary, Charlotte, NC.  A family visitation (drive -by only) will also be held on Friday, August 14, 2020 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm at her residence of 2017 English Drive, Charlotte, NC.

A private Celebration of Life for Mickey will be held at 11:00am Saturday at St. Paul Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC. Interment will immediately follow the service at York Memorial Park, Charlotte, NC.  In lieu of food, the family is requesting financial donations.
