Mr. Percy Frazier, 86 entered eternal peace on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at 3:12 am at Atrium Health Hospital in Charlotte NC.
Percy Frazier was born on December 26, 1933. He was the son of the late Oscar Frazier and the late Carrie Williams in Monroe, LA. Percy attended the local public schools in Monroe, LA; however, because he wanted more out of life, Percy pursued a military career at the age of seventeen with the United States Navy. After twenty-one years of faithful service, he retired in Charleston, SC as Chief Petty Officer First Class. Percy received many accolades during his long and distinguished service in the US Navy. He was recognized many times as sailor of the quarter, received several good conduct medals and the national defense medal. He was recognized for his service in the Vietnam and Korean Wars. Throughout his military career he served aboard vessels as large as aircraft carriers and as small as patrol craft. He even took on the dangerous job of working on mine sweepers. Percy traveled around the world several times during his military career and even enjoyed his time as a firefighting instructor while in the Navy.
In 1971 Percy retired from the military in Charleston, SC and he began working for the Department of Naval Special Services as the manager for the Wood Hobby Shop for many years. Percy decided to continue his education with Trident Technical College where he received an Associate Degree in Police Administration.
Percy then worked for the City of Charleston Police Department as a building maintenance supervisor and retired after 9 years of dedicated service. He also worked for several years as a security guard and as a counselor with the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Percy always had an entrepreneurial spirit and ran several businesses throughout his life. Most notably he was the owner of Mr. Munchies Restaurant in Charleston, SC, an ice cream parlor, and was co-owner of Sistas Soul Food Restaurant. He also owned a very popular carpentry company where he built kitchen cabinets, book cases, stereo cabinets, and tables. Also, as a community activist, Percy was founder of the nonprofit program called FAIR which helped youth to reach their full potential.
Recreationally, Percy was a member of the Prince Hall Masons, was an avid card player, and loved the sport of boxing. He could always be found watching the history or national geographic channels.
Percy was surprisingly talkative either by telephone or in person. His family and friends were aware of this habit. He never met a stranger. Percy was a “creature of habit”. He did the same thing at the same time every day. Indeed he was a unique person and will truly be missed.
Percy has now entered into the heavenly gates where he heard the master say “welcome home my good and faithful servant.”
Percy leaves to cherish his memories: children Percy Frazier Jr, Darlene King (Darryl), LaNiece Nekai Okwara, Oscar Lamont Frazier (Kiya); grandchildren: Percy Bates, Darrick King, Darolyn King, Darren King (Cynthia), CJ Okwara, Makayla Okwara; great grandchildren: Maia Bates, Mariah Bates, Maleah Bates, Percy Bates, Daylen King and Kamree King as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
