On Saturday June 3, 2017 W.J. Robinson (The Godfather) surrendered his ticket to the conductor to catch the morning train to Glory. As he took his seat he reflected on his life, starting with being born in Union County N.C. to Samuel and Victoria Robinson and how he was the last of his 8 siblings.
Mr. Robinson has been married to Edith Jones Robinson for 70 years and to that union 5 children were born. Walter (Marsha) Indian Head, Md. Jerry (Valerie,) Shirley Witherspoon and Geraline Richardson all of Charlotte and Jacqueline (deceased). His legacy includes 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Even though the Godfather’s main focus was his family anyone who knew him knew he was an avid hunter. So much so that many years ago a beagle was found on Albemarle Rd. and a news reporter for the then Charlotte News wrote an article that said” It’s probably J. Robinson’s, ’cause he’s a rabbit hunting fool.”
Nearly 60 years ago his family became members of Mowing Glade A.M.E. Zion Church. He served in several capacities but his first love was singing. As a young man he and the members of his quartet released a record. He was a member of the Prophets of Joy for over 40 years, member of the Mass Choir and The Men’s Choir.
Fondly referred to as “The God Father” was a title he took very seriously. His 95 years of living brought him a wealth of love, humility and wisdom: But most of all his walk and relationship with God became 1st in his life! A favorite song he often sang was “Keep on Praying”, the day before his passing though unable to walk alone or get out of his bed his granddaughter walked in his bedroom and found him down on his knees saying his prayers. God gives us the strength to do what we have to do.
