Mr. Taylor Adkins 95 of Charlotte. passed away January 28, 2017 at his residence . Funeral service will be held Thursday February 2, 2017 at Ramoth AME Zion Church 6600 Dixie River Rd. Charlotte, NC 28278. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am and the service will follow at 12:00 pm. Military rites and interment will take place on Friday February 3, 2017 at 9:00 am at the Historic Salisbury National Cemetery Salisbury, NC
Mr. Taylor “Papa” Adkins was born in Macon, Georgia, May 19, 1921 and departed this life peacefully at home surrounded by his family on January 28, 2017.
Taylor was the oldest child of ten. He was the son of the late William and Sannie Adkins of Macon, Georgia. Taylor received his formative education in the Springfield, Massachusetts School System where he graduated from Trade High School now known as Putnam High.
Papa, as he was fondly called by family and friends, migrated to Springfield, Massachusetts with his brothers and later moved to Silver Spring, Maryland. He moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in 2009. He then joined Ramoth AME Zion Church.
Taylor was a veteran of the United States Army and served in WWII. He worked for UniRoyal Tire Company in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts and retired after 30 years of service. After retirement Taylor became a prominent businessman in the Springfield Community, as he was owner and operator of Taylor Oil Service.
Papa was kind, loving and a very spiritual man. He was generous beyond description and loved going to church, saying his prayers and giving to his grandchildren.
He leaves to mourn his passing, but cherish his memories, his beloved wife(Babe) of 44 years Helen R. (Holmes) Adkins of Charlotte, his children: Fleadia Farran of Silver Spring, MD, Laverne (Glenn) Alleyne of Charlotte, NC and Rev. Robert (Sandra) Williams Silver Spring, MD. His grandchildren: Nikeya (Stephanie), LaTrisha (Howard) Gina Rose, Whitney (Askia), Dante (Brandi) and Jordan, great grandchildren: Trevon, Damon, Kaleh, Logan Taylor Rose, Takyia, Abdur-Razzaq and Abdus-Salam, great great grandchild: Aubree, godchildren: Esther, Thomasann, Betty, Margie and Judy. He leaves 2 sisters: Maggie and Deloris, 1 brother: Roosevelt, 4 sisters-in-law: Bertha, Nadine, Rev. Mildred (Alfred) and Alnita (Quentin), 3 brothers-in-law: Jerry, Nathaniel and Larry. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
