Sylvester Louis Oscar Dunn (64), affectionately called Lou, peacefully passed away on May 31, 2022. He was born January 1, 1958 in Nashville, Tennessee to proud parents Sylvester and Lois Dunn, who preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his sister Janice Lewis.
Lou attended Nashville Public Schools and was a 1975 graduate of John Overton High School. In 1981, he received his BA Degree in Management & Economics from Fisk University (HBCU) in Nashville, TN. Soon after college, he began his career at IBM and then later at Allstate Insurance. He moved up the ranks at Allstate Insurance and retired with them in 2018 after 34 years of service. Lou was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC, under the leadership of Pastor Clifford A. Jones, Senior. He was also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Lou was a humble, strong, smart black man and an inspiration to so many people. He loved his family and he loved God. He was a proud father to Ashley Dandridge, Kenya and Jahari and proud grandfather to Micah & Royalty. Education and athletics were very important to him, so he worked hard to ensure his daughters had the opportunity to pursue college and to be involved in athletics. Ashley’s sport of choice was track. Kenya and Jahari’s sport of choice were competitive swimming. Each of them went on to receive college degrees. Proud Dad! To Diane, his wife of 30 years, Lou was the world – the love of her life and best friend. He was an amazing Husband and Father who will be cherished FOREVER.
Lou was a fun loving man with a great sense of humor. He was a man of few words but was a great storyteller. He always had nuggets of wisdom and a way to help you solve any problem. He enjoyed the outdoors – whether it was working in the yard cutting the grass, planting trees/flowers, filling up the bird feeders with food, grilling, sitting on the porch, etc.. His favorite music was old school R&B & Jazz and westerns were his favorite TV or movie genre. It could be Gunsmoke, Buck & the Preacher – it didn’t matter. If it was a western – he enjoyed it. He was a “grillmaster” and knew how to make a brisket melt in your mouth! The beach was his favorite place to be.
Lou is loved and cherished by many and is survived by: his wife, Diane Robinson Dunn; daughters, Ashley Elizabeth Dandridge (Reginald), Kenya Jothany Dunn and Jahari Dyan Dunn; granddaughters, Micah Dandridge and Royalty Dandridge; sister Michelle Dunn Carter; and sisters-in-law Linda Thompson and Nancy Reed (James). His family also includes a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins, great nieces and great nephews. His friendship circle was large and all will cherish his memory. We love you Lou!
