Mrs. Nannie Cunningham Black, of Matthews, NC passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at her residence.
On Saturday, July 27, 2019 a Funeral service will be held at Rock Hill A. M. E. Zion Church, Indian Trail, NC 2327 Lawyers Rd. West Indian Trail, NC. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, service will follow at 12: Noon. The Interment, Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Road, Mint Hill, NC.
Surrounded by her loving family, Nannie C. Black passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at 10:20 am at her residence. She was born July 27, 1934 to the late Pink Cunningham and Mattie Cureton Cunningham in Union County, NC.
Nannie became a Christian at an early age joining New Unity A.M.E. Zion Church in Waxhaw, NC. Later in life she joined Rock Hill A.M.E. Zion Church in Indian Trail, NC. Her Church involvement included being a member of the Pilgrim Light Chorus, Garden Calvary Choir, Usher Board, Deaconess Board, Sunday School Department, Womens Home & Overseas Missionary Society (WHOMS), Lay Council, Stewardess Boards, Pastor’s Aid Society, Floral Club, Vacation Bible School, Culinary Ministry and a Unit Leader. Nannie enjoyed playing softball and was one of the team’s pitchers.
Nannie was educated in the Mecklenburg County Schools, graduating from Clear Creek High School in 1954. While in High School she met the love of her life, Nathan. After marrying in 1956, they celebrated their sixty-third anniversary in March 2019. Some of Nannie’s favorite past time activities were traveling, dining out and attending baseball games with family and friends.
Nannie was employed by Charlotte Mecklenburg School System at the Metro School serving mentally and physically challenged boys and girls throughout Charlotte-Mecklenburg County. She retired in June of 2005 with thirty years of outstanding service. At Metro School she received the Teacher Assistant of the Year and the Educator of the Month Awards. Nannie loved working at the Metro School and considered it a true blessing! She was loved by the Administrative Staff, co-workers, parents and children. Nannie greeted the children every morning with genuine compassion and patience offering them a hug and a loving smile.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers: Archie, Maxwell, Jake, John, Ede, Louis and William Cunningham; three sisters: Mandie Hamilton, Louise Reid and Mattie Cunningham.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her devoted husband of sixty-three years, Nathan Black: two sisters, Hannah Cunningham Carson and Uleen C. Jordan (Lawrence), two sisters-in-law, Hallie C. Black and Mable B. Byrum, goddaughters: Yolanda B. Elliott, Devin Funderburke and lndya Burns and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
