Mr. Marvin Alexander Helton, born August 14, 1933 in Charlotte, NC passed away on October 19, 2016 at the Royal Parks of Matthews Rehabilitation and Health Center in Matthews, NC after a long illness.  He married Mary Louise Miller on December 23, 1956.

 

Marvin is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Mary Louise Miller; his three sons, Audwin Alexander (Rae) of Louisville, KY, Ricky Damon (Loretta) of Washington, DC, and Tony Orlando (Sandra) of Matthews, NC; his seven grandchildren, Crystal Faith, Collin Alexander (Deonna), Carson Bryce, Candice Hope, Christopher Jordan, Chloe Love, and Chelsea Nicole; his sisters, Lena (William) Pickens, and Geraldine (Bobby) Clyburn both of Charlotte, NC; and his six sister-in-laws.  He is preceded in death by his parents, by his brother, the late CME Bishop Charles Lee Helton, and by his two sisters, Thelma Lucas and Lillie Miller.  He also leaves a host of other family members, church members, and friends to treasure his memory.

 

Marvin was raised in the J. H. Gunn Community area.  He attended Clear Creek High School but was drafted into the military (Korean War) before he could graduate.  He served two years in the army.  Upon his return, he attended Carver College in Charlotte, NC graduating in 1957 in their Accelerated High School Program.  He remained at Carver College for another two years receiving as associate degree.

 

Marvin worked for 35 years at UPS Freight formerly Overnight Transportation. He was a life-long member of Logan Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Charlotte, NC serving as the Church Treasurer for over 40 years, Sunday School Superintendent, and a Steward and Trustee at various times.    Marvin’s hobby or special interest in life was talking on the telephone and encouraging people to be the best that they could be in life, and reading the paper from the front cover to the last page.  He was an active member of the Senior Ministry at the church enjoying their trips.

 

The funeral will be Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at Parkwood Institutional Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 802 Tom Hunter Road, in Charlotte, NC.  The visitation will be 9:00AM to 11:00AM, with the family expected to arrive by 10:00AM.  The funeral service will be at 11:00AM with the burial service to follow at the Logan Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery, 9505 Parkton Road, Charlotte, NC.  The repast will follow the burial at Logan Chapel.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the “Logan Chapel CME Church/Senior Ministry Program” in memory of Marvin A.
