I met Jake the Snake at Harris Teeter years ago. The one on East Blvd is where we cut up. He always cracked a joke and made me laugh. May the works you have done, speak for you.

Mr Suggs was one of my favorite teachers when I went to Northwest. I have wonderful memories of being in his class and I'm thankful for everything he taught me. Love you Mr Suggs. You will forever be in our hearts.

Jake was a big personality that I always loved to see coming. To know him was to love him. I met him at WSSU and developed a quick long lasting friendship. I will miss you my friend.

Mr. Suggs, I only knew you for a short period of time but you would always put a smile on my face with your junk talking. Rest easy Mr. Jake and May God provide the family with strength through this rough time.

I offer my condolences and prayers to the family, friends, and co-workers of this awesome man affectionately known as Coach. Coach was one of the most down to earth guys I have ever encountered in my life. His creative cursing was always a hoot. Never did he have a cross word to say about other teachers, students, and admin hence the creative cursing. He was not judgmental, treated everyone equally, and always had a smile on his face. I left NW in 1990 to go to Harding, my sister had him when she was there and he ALWAYS referred to her as Donald Smiley's little sister. Memories of him as well as the other teachers and admin I met at NW will always be in my heart. May we all be grateful that we had the privilege of being in the presence of Coach Suggs in one facet or another and forever grateful to have known one hell of a man! Godspeed, Coach and Rest in Power in Heaven my dear friend!

Thank you for all your help at JCSU in CIAA. Rest in Peace.

I met Jake the very first week I was at WSSU (1970). He wanted to meet his homegirls. We became fast friends, both of us being Health and Physical Education Majors. Jake kept you laughing, and he made sure everything was going well for you while at SU. When he transferred from Northwest to Quail Hollow we were together again. Jake was an excellent teacher, coach, and sports official. He was also a great friend. He constantly talked about his daughter, grand-daughter and Marian. I will truly miss my buddy Jake . I know he has gone to a better place. He is resting in the arms of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Love your girl T J.

Mr. Suggs, you left us but your legacy will continue on forever. This is a irreplaceable loss for the ( North West ) family. He was rare, one of those teachers we looked forward to seeing everyday, and so funny. He reminded me of Sinbad..... We need to do a better job of letting teachers know how special they are to us....❤ May your soul rest in peace. Forever in our hearts but never forgotten.

I’ll always miss the days of Jake Suggs and Doug Spears coming to my shop (The Alter House). His threat to choke me if I didn’t get his clothes fitted correctly (Studdering). My Prayers go out to the Family. RIP JAKE! Terry Grier

Jake and I entered Winston Salem State University as freshman in the fall of 1967. We were cross the hall dorm mates in Brown Hall on the 5th floor. That's where the fun began. Big Jake, the most comical and hilarious guy on our floor. Always picking, teasing, jabbing and coming up with nicknames for fellow students, always in good humor, like half a head, big country slaughter etc. I could go on and on, into tomorrow of funny stuff, Jake use to say and do. Always the same, good for a joke, over the years. Wish I had more long time friends like Jake. I wish I could ask him now; Jake what's the joke? I'm sure he has one. Sincerely!

Coach Suggs seeing your picture brings me great sadness. I remember you from Quail Hollow, but you were more than a teacher -- You were a mentor & friend! Even though, we haven't spoken in years I still remembered all the guidance, jokes, & wisdom you shared. Take your rest in the arms of our Mighty Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Uncle Jake, had a “cussing ministry”! I absolutely positively loved it. It would embarrass my Aunt Blonde so badly, all she could say is, “JAKE”! He would give her a side glance, and continue to make his point. Every year, I found my way to him in the arena during CIAA. I knew we were going to eat and drink good! When my daughter and her friends, (who are “all” WSSU alumni), would come around Uncle Jake would say, “Enter to Learn!”and in unison they would say, “Depart to Serve”! Heaven help them if he asked some WSSU trivia and they didn’t know the answer! He loved his fraternity, and he wanted the whole world to know it! I take comfort in knowing that death is NOT the end. I look forward to seeing him again.

Coach Suggs was the best! I will always remember him reading the newspaper as he would call out the stretches in gym class. He would always call me by my last name at Quail Hollow and yell “Karagounis” when he saw me! He was so proud he could pronounce my hard last name and always said it with a smile! To his family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time! RIP!

Jake was always like the older big brother I never had ... always talking trash but being brutally honest. On my first day teaching at Northwest Middle (1983) I got cussed out for being an Aggie and putting down his lil school with the red & white goat 🙂 Back in the day the work environment was more like family and no matter who it was, employee or student, Jake was going to say mostly what's on his mind (sometimes missing his true calling as a comedian!) Jake was a favorite among all off us ... he also got me involved in coaching and refereeing, so we were always in contact during the those years in CMS and afterwards. Always one to call with something crazy to say (especially on our birthdays being the same day 🙂 some may not realize how brilliant he was with current events especially HBCU politics and history. Up until a couple weeks ago when I last visit him, he would always say that *3#@ * "mofo" Manning ... whats up, this time a bit quieter. RIP big brother and enjoy the Heavenly company of your frat buddies like Bob C and Skipper-Doo. Just make sure you guys got Holy Water in those red cups! 🙂 May God always continue to Bless your family and other love ones!

Jake and I taught together at Quail Hollow for many years. He was a special friend. The many years he did morning bus duty when my room was on the front hall I could always count on him to stop as he came in and cheer me up with some of his "nonsense." He was a special person, good teacher and coach. I have missed him since leaving QH many years ago. He will remain part of my "QH Family.. Sincere sympathy to his family and man friends.
