Mr. James Vernon ” Furman ” Tate 66 of Charlotte,NC. passed  May 31,2016 at His Residence. Memorial Service will be held Saturday June 4, 2016 at Pleasant  Hill  Baptist Church 517 Baldwin Ave. Charlotte, NC 28204. Visitation will begin at 2:30 pm and the service will follow at 3:00 pm.

James Vernon Tate, also known to his family and friends as “Furman” and “Tate,” passed away suddenly on May 31, 2016.

Tate was born in Anson County on January 7, 1950. He was raised in Richmond, VA, and Charlotte, NC, where he graduated from his beloved alma mater, Second Ward High School in the class of 1967. He briefly attended St. Paul’s College, but returned to Charlotte where he established a long career in sales for North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company and resided the rest of his life.

Tate loved cars and music, and he fashioned himself a mechanic and a guitarist: self-taught in both respects. Always the consummate competitor, for many years, he enjoyed bowling, basketball, and tennis…and, with his family, some ferocious, epic battles of Scrabble, backgammon, Uno, and Galaga.

He absolutely loved being stylish. No one could hold a candle to Tate’s pristine clothes and his signature coif – no one.

He is survived by his daughters Tshneka T. Tate, Jchaz V. Tate (2 grandsons), and Brandi Belton (1 grandson); his siblings James Chambers, Jr., Earl C. Chambers, Kathy V. Chambers, and Earlene Smith; 2 aunts; and a host of nieces, nephew, cousins, and friends.
