Rev. Dr. James M. Sloan 75 of Charlotte, NC . passed away Tuesday January 10, 2017 , at Carolinas Medical Center – Main.Funeral service will be held Saturday January 14, 2017 at Greenville Memorial AME Zion Church 6116 Montieth Dr. Charlotte, NC 28213. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm and the service will follow at 1:00 pm. Military Rites and interment will take on Tuesday January 17, 2017 at the Historic Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC. 28144
The Reverend Dr. James McArthur Sloan was born October 3, 1942 in Rowan County, Salisbury,
North Carolina, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Sloan. He was preceded in death, in addition to his
parents, by one brother, Johnny Sloan, Jr.
Dr. Sloan was married to Janice Kennedy Sloan for 32 years.
Dr. Sloan received his early education in the county schools of Rowan County. He went on to
graduate from Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Hood Theological Seminary
in Salisbury, NC. He received The Doctorate of Divinity from Hood Theological Seminary.
Reverend Sloan served his country in the U.S. Navy as Chaplain, and Lieutenant Commander.
Dr. Sloan received Christ at an early age andjoine£1 Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Kannapolis,
NC. He later joined Sandy Ridge A.M. E. Zion Church in Landis, NC. He was very active in many
capacities of the A. M. E. Zion Church.
Dr. Sloan heard the call to “go preach the Gospel” in 1963. He joined the Western North Carolina
Conference, and his first pastorate was at Elmwood on the Statesville District. Dr. Sloan served his
beloved Zion faithfully with appointments in the Western North Carolina, North Arkansas,
Philadelphia/Baltimore, West Alabama, Cape Fear, West Central (NC), and Kentucky Annual
Conferences. The Reverend Dr. James M. Sloan was the Presiding Elder of the North Charlotte
District of the Western North Carolina Conference for many years until his death. He served as a
faithful member of the Camp Dorothy Walls Board and as the Treasurer for the Piedmont Episcopal
District and the Western North Carolina Conference for the last four Presiding Prelates.
Dr. Sloan was the recipient of numerous awards and recognition. His life was a sermon ofhumble
service to God and mankind. Dr. Sloan’s humble spirit, steady devotion, and servant-leadership
style set the standard for many who have entered the ministry under his pastorate and also for those
whom he has touched, mentored, and encouraged along the way. He is a member of the Kappa
Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
The Reverend Dr. James McArthur Sloan enjoyed a full and productive life in Christian ministry.
He traveled the world, and enjoyed every moment of the same.
Those celebrating the life of the Reverend Dr. James McArthur Sloan and cherishing his memories
include his loving and devoted wife, Janice Kennedy Sloan. Three children, Jia Gay, Dubai, United
Arab Emirates; Jason Kennedy, Raleigh, NC; and Jennifer Sloan, Charlotte, NC. Three
grandchildren, Kelsey Gay, Silver Springs, Maryland; Kendall Gay, Atlanta, Georgia; Chandler
Sloan, Charlotte, NC. Seven sisters, Margaret Brinson (Richard), Vero Beach, Florida; Lyndia Lane,
Jacksonville, NC; Minnye Sloan, Jackie Mingo (Rufus), and Hazel Murphy, Kannapolis, NC;
Wanda Wilson, Concord, NC; Sadie Mayfield, Charlotte, NC. One brother, Billy Ray Sloan,
Kannapolis, NC; Two adopted sisters, Jackie Dunlap and Joyce Williams, and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
