Mrs. Illa Mae Hudson Augustus Miller was born on April 19, 1924 in Richmond County, North Carolina to the late James Henry and Maggie Hines Hudson. She departed this life on February 28, 2020, at Huntersville Oaks Nursing facility in Huntersville, North Carolina after a long battle of many illnesses.
Illa attended Clear Creek School in Mecklenburg County and graduated from Second Ward High School.She earned a certificate of Home Nursing in 1951 fromthe State Department of Public Instruction Trade and Industries through the Second Ward Extension School. In 1971, Illa earned a certificate in Elder Care from Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, North Carolina and was also certified from the Eldercare Corporation. She worked many years with private duty nursing services and cared for the elderly until her retirement.
Early in her youth, Illa accepted Christ as her Personal Savior at her home church, Simfield AME Zion Church in Matthews, North Carolina. She served as a loyal and dedicated member of her church and conference. Illa was a very strong spiritual leader for over 60 years until her health declined. During this time, she served her church in many capacities; Church Secretary, President of Deaconess Board, President of Usher Board, President of the Pastor’s Steward Board, the Missionary Board and the Trustee Board.
Illa was a loving and devoted wife to Matthew Augustus, Jr until his death. From this union they raised 9 Children.
In June 1986, Illa married James E. Miller. Theyresided in Charlotte with family and friends until his death.
Illa loved her family and cherished the memories of her 2 brothers Mr. Evans Caldwell, Rev. James Thomas Caldwell, 3 sisters, Mrs. Mary Crowder, Mrs. CreloaBoulware and Mrs. Laurina Marshall, all preceded her in death.
Illa was a devoted mother and loving friend to her children, always teaching them to be good Christians, to love family, work hard, and be honest. She leaves to cherish 4 sons, Raymond Hudson of Clearwater Fl, Matthew Augustus III, Alphonzo Augustus, Jonathan Augustus, 5 Daughters, Maxine Eaves, Joyce Lanier (Henry), Addie Jackson (William), Pamela Tidwell, all of Charlotte, North Carolina Grace Davis (Tyrone) of Winston Salem, North Carolina, and 2 Sister in laws, Louvenia Augustus of Bayboro, North Carolina andMary Caldwell of Charlotte, North Carolina, 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 7 great greatgrandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 7, 2020 at Simfield AME Zion Church 2500 Simfield Church Rd. Matthews, NC 28105.Visitation will begin at 11:00 am and the service will follow at 12:00 pm. Interment will be in the Oakalwn Cemetery 1612 Oaklawn Ave. Charlotte, NC 28216.
