Memorial Service for Hazeline Ervin Funderburk Blocker 6.22.18
“Tiny” as she was affectionately called may have been small in stature, 4’9 to be exact; however she was a strong, determined, powerful intellectual who in the year 2000 retired after a 30 year career with the City of Charlotte Fire Department an otherwise male dominated field. She held the position of Communications Dispatcher, the first responders frequently remarked on her exquisite use of the English language and just how clear her dialect was whenever her voice came over the radio airwaves, not to mention her professionalism and attention to detail.
Hazel was educated in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system and continued her education at Spellman, a liberal arts women’s college located in Atlanta, Georgia.
She was married to James Thomas Funderburk, and unto that union a son and daughter were born.
She was the daughter of the late Hazel L. Ervin and Marcille Kilgore Griffen, her mother Marcille transitioned to glory only three months ago. Over the past eight years due to declining health, Hazel knew in her heart that she would soon see her Mother and told her to wait for her.
Hazel had a few great loves; her former pets, Boo-Boo, Tiny and Topper, she loved all genres of music, enjoyed shopping with her sisters and friends, was fond of cooking, foreign cars and most definitely the color red.
She loved her siblings deeply and adored her best friends, Violet Mason and Sarah Garvin.
Hazel spent her life looking out and caring for her family, a perfectionist to her core. An avid reader and lover of English Literature, she was a very wise and intelligent woman.
Hazel had a very real and strong faith in God, was an extremely devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. There was nothing that she would not do for her children. She provided a very good life for her descendants and often went overboard, but that was who she was, a Giver with a HUGE heart.
She leaves to cherish her memory her faithful daughter Tiffany Funderburk, Eden, NC and her beloved son Akeem Shakur Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren, Erica Wallace, Ashley Wallace, Christopher Wallace, Amber Wallace and Monica Coffey Danville VA; seven great grandchildren, Kyla, Cameron, Camille, Zemarion, Aviianna, Maya and Sincere all of whom reside in Charlotte; two sisters, Bernita Mumford, Durham, NC and Robin Kilgore-Rodey (Greg), Huntersville, NC plus a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Hazel was predeceased by one brother James Kenneth Ervin and one sister Hattie B. Anthony.
At 5:05 pm Monday June 11th, an Angel of Mercy whispered in her ear “Let’s Go Home Hazel”
