I just learned of Mr. Blakeney's passing today. This was hard to hear, however, he served his time here on earth with an ever present smile. I met Mr. Blakeney when I was a teenager, and in the Upward Bound Program at Johnson C. Smith University. He spoke of his years in the Coast Guard and always provided us with teachable moments as he often spoke of his family. I was able to work alongside of Mr. Blakeney when I came to work for Mecklenburg County. He would provide me with moments of inspiration during difficult times, and always had a kind word to my oldest son, when he saw him with me during crunch times at the office. Mr. Blakeney was also one of my dad's Bojangle's Buddies, who often meet at Bojangle's to enjoy each other and talk about old times and current events. To the family, Mr. Blakeney has touched so many lives in such a positive way. To you he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, cousin, uncle, etc. To may more he was a true blessing.

Sincere condolences To The Blakeney Family, So sorry for your loss. The pain, grief, and the feelings of helplessness can seem unbearable. At such times comfort from Almighty God can be very comforting, as "the God of all comfort." 2 Corinthians 1:3. With Peace and Loving-Kindness,

Please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of Gerald. I had the privilege of supervising Gerald at Youth & Family Services for a number of years. Gerald was a wonderful person with a kind heart and gentle spirit. He was a great advocate for the children and families that he touched. He will be greatly missed. He loved to tell his coworkers about his boys and their accomplishments. Wonderful man with an infectious smile and we were better for knowing him. Sherri Porter

I knew Gerald Blakeney as the father of one of my son, Austin's, best friends from Kindergarten through 5th grades. Brought him to a birthday party at our house on a very cold, icy day. Without Colin, the party would not have happened at all. Guess Mr. Blakeney knew that, because I still remember his efforts to this day- My fondest remembrance of a very special man... Yes, he will be missed! My hopes for your memories to hold you until you meet him again and hear more stories~

May I offer my sincere condolences to Gerald's family. Having worked with and gotten to know his son Colin, I am certain Gerald was every bit the fine and upstanding man, husband, and father described in his obituary. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
