Ethel Jean Dennis Lowery was born to Grace Pride Dennis and Richard Walker Dennis on a hot day  in August (30th).  She departed this life on September 20, 2018 at University Place Nursing and Rehabilitation.  She was the fourth child of nine children and was  affectionately called “Jean” by her parents, siblings and friends.

She was educated in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system.  She studied to become a medical receptionist and also studied speed writing.  She suffered through the years with asthma which probably contributed to her not  fulfilling her desire to work in this capacity. She never complained about her disabilities as she knew that God was in control of all areas of her life.  She worked at Pic and Pay in Matthews for many years until her retirement.

Jean joined Bethel A.M.E Zion Church  and was converted at an early age.  She was a loyal servant to the Choir, Missionaries (once serving as the YAM  President). Sunday School Teacher of the Children’s Class. She also worked on the Pastor’s Aide Board and the Usher Board.

She married Spofford Lowery who preceded her in death.  After her marriage, she joined her husband’s church, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and became an active member.  She was a member of the Senior Choir  (later named the Chancel Choir & Mass Choir)  where she served as secretary for several years.  She always attended Sunday School and Bible Study.  She was also President of Missionary, Chairperson of the Deaconness Board, supported the Lanes Creek Women’s Auxiliary serving as the Vice President and 1st Vice President of the Mecklenburg County Union and District Meetings Women’s Convention.

Jean has always enjoyed reading the Word and other good books, word search puzzles and was an avid exerciser.  She loved shopping, helping others, physical exercise at the gyms and also walking seeing the handwork of the Lord and enjoying it.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers: Richard, Paul and James Franklin, one sister, Bessie Beatty and one step granddaughter, Teresa Lowery.  She leaves to cherish fond memories one brother: Ray Dennis (Jean), three sisters: Dorothy Crosby (Joe) – Baltimore, MD, Barbara Belton (Chester) – Mt. Holly and Stella Tucker (Augustine) – Charlotte, one niece, Theresa Dennis, who was raised as a sister, one stepdaughter, Annie Mae Lowery, one step-granddaughter, Tawanna Lowery, one step-grandson, Charles Hinton (Janeen) and two step great-granddaughters.  She also leaves several other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

We will truly miss Jean for her kindness and generous spirit as she loved helping others.  We will miss her laughter and YES we will miss her fussing too.  For we know that even with the fussing she was filled with love for her family and friends.  She has finished her course now and is now resting safely in the arms of the Lord.

Jean has requested that all donations be sent to the American Lung Association in her memory.
