Service Announcements

Dorothy, of Charlotte,NC. passed away July 7, 2017. Funeral service will be held July 12, 2017 at  Friendship Missionary Baptist Church 3400 Beatties Ford Rd. Charlotte, NC 28216. Visitation will follow beginning at 11:00am. Funeral  service will begin at 12:00pm. Interment will take place at York Memorial Park.

Dorothy “Dot”  Mae Roberts was born on January 4, 1930 (commonly celebrated on 12-29-29) to the late Raymond Oates and Sula Roberts Borders, and raised by her late grandparents Cornelius and Lollie Roberts.  Dot was preceded in death by her younger brother, Miles “Sonny” Borders.

Dot graduated from John Chavis High School.  This is where her love of basketball began.  Dot was always ready to tell about how good she was on the court.  Not only did she love basketball, but football, and baseball as well.

At an early age, Dot joined Washington Missionary Baptist Church in Waco, NC.  She was an active member throughout her childhood, as well as during her adult years.  She was a Sunday School teacher, a soprano in the church choir, and a member of the WMU.  In 1968, Dot was lead to join Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC, and would soon after relocate to Charlotte.  During her years at Friendship, Dot continued to sing praises unto God as a member of the church choir, and also participated in various missionary groups and senior citizen activities.

Dot married the late Joe P. Hoyle in 1947.  To this union was born 3 girls whom they both loved and adored.  Dot worked as a family domestic for the John Akers family of Gastonia, NC for 20 years.  She later moved on employment with AT&T up until her retirement in 1991.  Dot was an active member for many years of Alpha Pi Chi Sorority, a social organization that focuses on providing opportunities for energetic women to develop and implement their talents and skills.

Dot loved to travel!  She traveled to various places within the continental US as well as Hawaii, London, and Nassau, Bahamas.  An avid gardener, Dot took special care with each flower that she planted.  She wanted everyone who came to visit to see her new blooms, and what was growing.  She loved to take pictures by her flowers, and occasionally would share a piece of a plant with you.

Dot is survived by her sister, Pauline B. Webber of Kings, Mountain, NC;  3 daughters, Barbara Jo Hoyle White of Burtonsville, MD;  Sula Cassandra “Sandy” Hoyle Bobbitt (Edward, Sr.) and Cynthia Hoyle Stover, both of Charlotte, NC;  6 grandchildren-Dorothy Nicole Bobbitt, Thomas Jeffery Jackson, Jr., Gregory T. White, Edward “Little Ed” Bobbitt, Jr. (Tonya), Shirma Stover-George (Milford), and Devin Ryan Stover-Brevard;  16 great-grandchildren;  a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins;  special “daughter” Peggy Ward, and her loving  “son-in-law”/caregiver Perry Armstrong.
