Mrs. Cherry Higgins Miller ,103 of Charlotte. passed away Wednesday, November 28,2018 at her residence. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 5,2018 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church 7237 Tuckaseegee Rd. Charlotte, NC 28214. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am and the service will follow at 12:00 pm. Interment will be in the Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens 11201 Beatties Ford Rd. Huntersville, NC 28078.
Mrs. Cherry Higgins Miller was born June 26, 1915 in Edgefield, South Carolina to the late Oliver and Mary Higgins. She departed her earthly life November 28, 2018. The sixth of ten children: sisters; Sarah Lou Higgins Smith, Georgia Higgins Wingate, Ada Higgins Lindo, Holley Higgins and Rubie Higgins Fisher; brothers; Robert Higgins, Rayford Higgins, James Higgins and William Higgins; all preceded her in death.
Mrs. Miller and her family lived Laurens and Greenwood Counties, South Carolina where she resided until her adult life. She attended public school there, although the family experienced hardships she was determined to continue school because of her profound love and thirst for learning. Very early in Mrs. Miller’s childhood she joined Springfield Baptist Church in Edgefield, South Carolina. She became a student of the bible and continued to read and study throughout her life. Mrs. Miller met the love of her life Fred Douglas Miller in February 1932. They were married months later on December 25, 1932. Their love and commitment to marriage endured for fifty five years, until Mr. Miller’s death In 1987. During the first years of marriage the Millers traveled extensively due to Mr. Miller’s work as a Crane operator. The happy couple was not blessed with biological children, however their love and support were always there as surrogate parents for other family members and those in need.
Mrs. Miller’s long and storied tenure, over thirty years with National Linen Company as master presser did not go unnoticed. Her work performance was regarded as flawless, which she attributed this distinction to less talk on the job and attention to detail.
In earlier years, this remarkable lady enjoyed as hobbies, extensive gardening, canning and freezing vegetables and fruits. Additionally she spent time beautifying her yard with flowers, sewing, and reading. Mrs. Miller was quite an interesting and unique personality. She has a wealth of knowledge and experiences to share, not to mention that she is not shy about expressing her opinions, even at one hundred and three years old.
Mrs. Miller became affiliated with Mount Carmel Baptist Church under the Pastorship of Reverend Dr. Davidson in 1947, and maintained active membership and involvement in church activities over seventy-one years. In 1948, she became Secretary of her Sunday School Class and continued to serve in that capacity until a year ago. Mrs. Miller was a participant and volunteered in Mecklenburg Senior Nutrition Program, Wednesday Morning Bible Study and The Senior Ministry.
Mrs. Miller leaves to cherish the wonderful memories, Nieces: Belinda Dorn Turner, Mildred Thomas, Doris Sanders, all of Greenwood, South Carolina; Denise Materre (Louis), Denver, Colorado, Inez Peterson, New York, New York; Vivian Detter, Prince George County, Maryland; Nephews; Harold Fisher (Madlyn), Washington, DC; Elliot Dorn (Jean), Calvin Dorn (Betty), all of Greenwood, South Carolina; Sister-in-Law: Virginia Higgins, Washington, DC; Emily Grant, Baltimore, Maryland; Caregiver Neice: Sherie Devone; Godson, Willie Artis (Mary); Goddaugther, Madge Givens; life long neighbor, Utha Johnson; Special Friends: Darnell Pough (Willie). Marie Smith (Walter) all of Charlotte, North Carolina. A host of other relatives, church family, friends and neighbors.
