Cecil George Thompson was born to Anita Joseph and Cecil Davis on the 10th of March 1935 in Limon, Costa Rica. He was the youngest and only son of his mother’s three surviving children, Hazel, Sarah, and George.
The family moved to Cativa, Panama where George was raised living an adventurous, country life. George’s father instilled in George that he was to take care of “the girls”. George’s father died when he was 13 years old and he took his responsibility of being the man of the family seriously . He often did all sorts of odd jobs to bring something home to his mother and sisters. His experiences on the small, quiet farm in Cativa was great, but life was beckoning him and his family on an adventurous journey. His mother travelled the short distance to Colon, Panama where he attended High School. Things changed quickly for George in Colon. The amount of friends he had exploded. His appetite for travelling increased. There was even a multiplication in the number names he had. George earned one of theses aliases the year he joined the marching band in High School. As the band performed during an Independence Day celebration his tall, lanky body swayed from side to side, while his long, strong arms evoked the rhythm from the bass drum. As he played enthusiastically, the band and the crowd kept stride with his performance. On that day he began being called “Rombombo,” like the sound that came from the bass drum as he played.
George wanted to become an automotive mechanic. The closure of registration for this course lead his mother to enroll him in the machinist program. It’s not what he wanted, but his excellent mathematical ability and the new skill set turned out to be a match; and he did well as a machinist. Besides working in his trade, George loved an invitation to play “la cancha”, a local Spanish word for basketball hoop. He’d play all day until night fall on weekends. Yes, he was tall but make no mistake about it, he could play. He was so good that during one of their tours through Central America the Globe Trotters picked him up to play through Central America the Globe Trotters picked him up to play with them.
His strong sense of responsibility for family enabled George to care for his wife and daughters well. George met his wife Silvia Reid in New York City. Despite both of them living in the same small city of Colon they never met, though they had several friends and acquaintances in common. George and Silvia married on July 23, 1966 in Brooklyn, NY. They had two daughters Celina and Cecilia Thompson.
George rededicated is life to the Lord Jesus Christ on Good Friday in 1998 at Lenox Road Baptist Church, where Reverend Dr. Kirkpatrick Cohall became his pastor. Many people had the opportunity to watch how George’s faith in Jesus Christ, the power of God’s Holy Spirit and George’s commitment to please His Heavenly Father transformed his life. There were bad choices, struggles, and great challenges, but he prayed and sang his way through them all. He acknowledged GOD’s grace and mercy throughout his life. His heart towards the LORD could be seen by watching him worship in church. On any day, at any time he would randomly sing out “I’m so grateful, He’s so faithful. “ He established his understanding of the Christian faith at Lenox Bible Institute. George graduated and was godly proud of this accomplishment. George relocated to Charlotte NC with his wife in August of his year. He began attending Christian Faith Assembly under the leadership of Pastors Leon and Carol Threatt.
George is preceded by his father Cecil Davis, his mother Anita Joseph, sisters Sarah Davis, and Hazel Headly and his daughter Cecilia Thompson. Cecil George Thompson will be dearly missed by his wife Silvia Thompson, his daughter Celina Thompson and a host of loving relatives and a myriad of friends here and abroad.
