Bettye F. Spears, lovingly known to all as Jean, was born on May 28, 1949 and transitioned home to be with the Lord on April 11, 2021. Jean was born to Jessie Lee Foster and Lula Mae Foster in Monroe, NC. She grew up in a loving home along with her 5 other siblings. She attended York Road and graduated from Myers Park High School in 1967. She married her loving husband John Thomas Spears on January 4, 1981 and they spent the last 40 years being devoted to one another. During that time, they were given the joy of raising 1 child together, along with 3 grandchildren, who had become her everything.
Jean found employment as an accountant before moving onto the US Postal Service on February 14, 1987, where she was a loyal mail processor for 28 years until her retirement December 31, 2015. In her free time, she enjoyed reading novels, including the Harry Potter series, doing crossword puzzles and going shopping. Jean was also a member of South Tryon Presbyterian Church and Bread of Life Ministries, both under Pastor James Logan. During her time at both churches, she was both a Deacon and Elder of the church as well as part of the Treasury Department and on the Senior choir, before becoming a caregiver to her mother until her transition in 2009. Although she did not have a church home, she was a welcomed member of the Empowerment for Living Ministries, under Pastor Fredrick Gillespie.
Jean was preceded in death by both her father, Jessie Lee Foster and mother, Lula Mae Foster, and 2 sisters, Marian Foster and Christine Wallace.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, John Spears of Charlotte, NC; daughter Leikithia Mathis (Jeffvari Small) of Charlotte, NC, 3 grandchildren DeAndre Sifford, Marian Mathis, and Jaxon Mathis of Charlotte, NC; siblings Jessie Harries of Greensboro, NC, Dallas Foster of High Point, NC, and Denise Vann (Michael Vann) of Tampa, FL; nieces and nephews: Britain Foster (Suzanne Foster) of Lusby, MA, Erika Harris of Charlotte, NC, Aaron Foster and Sylvestry Wilburn both of Tampa, FL, Shana Harris of Greensboro, NC, Kristipher Mathis (Sylvia Mathis) of Tampa, FL, Amber Spears of Harrisburg, NC, and Tiffany DaCosta (Leighton DaCosta) of San Diego, CA She also leaves to cherish her memory aunts: Eloise Chambers and Mary Bell Mcilwain, Lily Mae Dixon, and Lucille “Amy” Roberson both of Charlotte, NC, a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, church families and co-workers.
The family would like to thank all who have sent flowers and cards, visited, called and genuinely showed love for the passing of Bettye Jean. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, the family will not be doing a repass. Instead the immediate family will use this time to gather and reflect on the memory of Mrs. Spears.
