Mr. Washington Samuel Berry, Jr., affectionately known as “June”, was born on November 28, 1956 in Charlotte, North Carolina to the late Mary Alice Berry and Washington Samuel Berry. He departed this life on Thursday morning, September 17, 2026, at the age of 69. Washington was educated in Mecklenburg County Schools – graduating from Myers Park High School. He proudly served his country as a United States Marine. His commitment to service continued throughout his civilian life. He worked as a Custodian in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System, where he became a familiar and valued presence in the school community. Washington was a former member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Pineville, N.C., where his faith was an important part of his life. Washington had a special passion for coaching football and served as a coach at Smith Middle School. Coaching was more than a pastime for him. It was an opportunity to encourage young people, teach teamwork and discipline, and make a lasting difference in their lives. He also helped run several basketball leagues throughout Charlotte – serving as an administrator and coach as well. While in good health, Washington remained active by playing softball in multiple leagues, where his love of competition and camaraderie brought him many friendships and memorable moments. He will be remembered for his love of family, his dedication to service, his passion for sports, and the many lives he touched through coaching. Washington was a proud and devoted father who will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Lorenzo Andrew Berry (Beatrice), Samuel Robert Berry, and John Austin Berry. He also leaves to cherish his memory two brothers, Keith Lorenzo Berry (Linda) and Quintin Dexter Berry; Four grandchildren, Adonis Berry, Donovan Cornwell, Veronica Berry and Jean Cormier, III. Though he is no longer with us, the memories he created and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of his family, friends, former students, athletes, teammates, and countless others who had the privilege of knowing him. *May Washington Samuel Berry Jr. rest in eternal peace*

Dr. Benjamin Augustus Dias June 1, 1937 – September 8, 2026 A Distinguished Gentleman. An Educator. A Father. A Grandfather. A Friend. A Life Well Lived. Dr. Benjamin Augustus Dias, 89, lived a life defined by education, generosity, family, and an enduring belief in the potential of others. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Dr. Dias was a proud son of Jamaica who later made his home in Charlotte, North Carolina, while maintaining a deep connection to his Jamaican roots. He earned his doctorate from Atlanta University and devoted much of his professional life to higher education as a chemist, educator, and academic leader. He served at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, where he retired after serving as Dean of the Chemistry Department. Education was more than Dr. Dias's profession—it was part of his life's purpose. His commitment extended beyond the university classroom to students in Jamaica, particularly those in the Chemistry Department at MICO University Collegein Kingston. He believed that financial circumstances should never determine the limits of a promising student's potential and helped create opportunities for students to continue their education. As distinguished as his professional life was, his greatest legacy cannot be measured by degrees or titles alone. It lives in the people he taught, encouraged, supported, cared for, and loved. Throughout his life, Dr. Dias was affectionately known as Pops, Dad, Daddy, Ben, Benji, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, Uncle Bus, Busta, and Sir. Each name reflected a relationship and a special place he held in the lives of others. Among those who held a special place in his later years was his longtime caretaker, Betty Wyrick (Adrian, Sr), who was by his side for many years. Her care, support, and steadfast presence became an important part of his daily life, and her devotion is remembered with deep gratitude by the Dias family. Dr. Dias was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Dias and Irene Morgan Dias, and his siblings, Teddy, Wesley, Harris, and Melretta. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Heinrich "Ricky" (Pauline) Dias, Andrea Hamilton (Norman), Keary Dias, and Dain Dias; his ten grandchildren, Shawn Ellington, Marie Lacayo (Orlando), Staci-Ann Dias-Moore (Trenis), Sanaah Hamilton, Aliyah Hamilton, Lauren Dias, Nakia Grier, Luke Dias, Avery Dias, and Eden Dias; his eight great-grandchildren; his longtime caretaker, Betty Wyrick (Adrian, Sr); extended family; former students and colleagues; and the many people whose lives were touched by his presence. Dr. Dias will be remembered as an educator who challenged minds, a scholar and academic leader, and a man who believed ability deserved an opportunity to flourish. His family and friends will remember his wisdom, humor, distinctive personality, guidance, and the presence that made him uniquely their own. Dr. Benjamin Augustus Dias lived eighty-nine remarkable years, but the influence of those years will reach far beyond them. His legacy continues through the students he taught and supported, the lives he touched, and the generations of family who will carry his memory forward. There will be an unmistakable absence where his presence once stood, but there will also be profound gratitude—for his life, his knowledge, his generosity, his lessons, and the privilege of knowing and loving him. Mrs. Bessie Moore Forney was born September 3, 1926, to the late James Len and Mary Douglas Moore. She was educated in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. In the early 1950s, she joined New Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. M. McMoore, remaining a faithful member for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters, Ruth Lyons and Louise Harvell, and her beloved daughter, Gloria Tillman. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Joyce Wright of Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren: Rodney Wright, Ryan Wright (Missy) of Charlotte, NC, Rafik Tillman, and Makeba Tillman; son-in-law, Earnest Tillman of Miami, Florida; and sixteen great-grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish her memory a very special cousin, Virginia Covington of Houston, Texas; a special niece, Cecilia Tillman (Alton); and a host of nieces and one nephew, all of Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Forney, the proud matriarch of the family, held deep affection for her family, friends, and Joyce’s ABWA Sisters. She cherished every moment spent with the Essence Social Club members, especially Joan McDonald, Janice Standifer, and Jenny Wallace (John), with celebrations over Zoom marking true highlights of her later years. A passionate sports fan, she was a diehard supporter of the Atlanta Braves and Carolina Panthers, always enjoying game updates from Joyce. Her remarkable memory remained intact through the years, holding steadfast onto family birthdays. Sustained by unwavering faith, strong will, and determination, her heart’s desire was to be with her Heavenly Father—while Joyce prayed she would reach her milestone 100th birthday. God answered both prayers, and today she is celebrated as the Queen she truly was.

Doris Hicks Crawford, age 93, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, in Houston, Texas, after a long, fruitful, and purpose-filled life. Born on February 10, 1933, in Clinton, NC, to Cassel and Justine Hicks, farmers and respected members of the community. Doris was the last of five siblings. Growing up during challenging times, Doris never let obstacles stop her from achieving her goals. As the daughter and eldest child of sharecroppers and later self-sufficient farmers, she learned the value of hard work from an early age working in the cotton and tobacco fields of eastern North Carolina. The first in her family to graduate from college, she finished North Carolina Central University, Durham NC, with a degree in education. There she met a football player from Charlotte, James W. Crawford, Jr., whom she later married in 1957. As an educator, Doris taught in a few North Carolina cities, but spent the large part of her career in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System for 37 years. First at Billingsville Elementary, but principally at Northwest Junior High School. She loved her students and the people she worked with, and often guided. A longtime resident of 1230 Dean Street, in Oaklawn Park Charlotte, a community of achievers and servants in Christ, she and James raised two children, James W. Crawford, III, and Stephanie Louise Crawford. Ever ready to offer guidance or correction, Doris was filled with love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and friends. After marrying James Jr., Doris, a member of First Baptist Church, Clinton, NC, joined Grace AME Zion Church, Charlotte, NC. Doris and James built a home where love and support was in abundant supply for James III, and Stephanie. Doris lived a life of purpose and intention and passed that legacy on to her children. Doris was known for her strength of spirit, readiness to lend a hand to family, friends, and colleagues alike, and her commitment to Grace AME. She had a gift for gardening and there was no better cook. A professional to be emulated, she touched countless lives through her career in education, community involvement, her church, and dedication to her family. Doris is survived by her son, James W. Crawford, III, daughter-in-law, Elizabeth A. Crawford, and grandsons Nicholas James and Alexander Stephan Crawford. She was preceded in death by her husband James W. Crawford, Jr., and beloved daughter Stephaine Louise Crawford.
